Thread Publishing began, like many things in life, with a simple question: “If money were no object, what would you do with your life?”
This was an answer I knew. I would want to meet inspirational people doing some good in this world, to use our team's writing and documentary-making skills to tell their stories. We would give a voice to positive causes and purpose-driven business initiatives, and find a way to mix the heart and the head in business.
Once this impassioned mental speech was over, I could see how strange it was to wait for a dream to start. I knew things had to change, and so, change they did.
The early days
In the very early days, when Thread Publishing was nothing more than a persistent urge to do something that mattered in business, I wrote the words ‘heart’ and ‘head’ on my notepad and stared at the letters for a while. I was convinced there was a space for the two to co-exist in business but I didn’t know what it looked like.
Eventually, I saw the word ‘Thread’ emerge from the squiggles. And I realised that we could become the link that connects the head and heart in business through our storytelling.
What I didn't realise back then was that the word 'Thread' would take on a deeper meaning. Today, we connect our talented network of writers directly with our client network. These direct connections benefit our clients and writers alike; with the freedom and commitment that comes from a 1:1 freelancer relationship, with none of the risk that comes from the traditional freelancer model.
Thread Publishing does not exist to tell stories for the sake of telling nice stories; we tell stories to support organisations with purpose that are making a genuine difference in some way. It’s an incredible privilege. We talk to the people who inspire us every day – whether they’re down the road on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, in Nepal, Manila or Uganda. We speak to those living on the edge, doing intelligent and heartfelt things through their business to help others in some way. Our innate curiosity feeds from their experiences, and we turn to the fundamental skills of journalism and documentary-making to get their story heard; to support their purpose.

I've always have a deep appreciation for business, and the constant creativity that drives it forward.
Just ten years ago, it was clear that any big business could monopolise their industry with an expensive advertising campaign, whatever their values. Now, technology has stripped this power away and given it directly to the consumer, and this connection is more transparent than ever.
The scales have tipped in favour of companies with head and heart. Companies with a clear purpose to do genuine good through their business or beyond their business, they're the ones being recognised in this digital age where good news travels fast.
How we work
For us, the key to a happy business is not too dissimilar from the key to a beautiful interview: when we stop and really listen to what people have to say, we're constantly surprised and rewarded.
Everyone we work with at Thread Publishing has their own incredible potential – their unique groove and flow that makes them who they are. With this in mind, we know that when you give people the tools to do something amazing, they’ll do it easily.
So we do our best at work to be flexible and adaptable, to encourage creativity and make our people part of something that matters. It’s still early days, but we think it makes for happier staff, better retention rates, and a strong company – which, in turn, brings more positive change.
This is why we are a proud B Corp. We have happily jumped through many certification hoops to prove that we are ethical and transparent to our very core.
The scales have tipped in favour of companies that have heart. Those that do are being recognised. And we are here to help by telling their stories and connecting them to their followers.
Our first step was always to put our stories out there – to capture people’s interest and build momentum around the companies and causes that matter. But we’re not the type of people to witness a story without getting involved.
That’s why the future of Thread Publishing revolves around the combined strength of our growing community. By constantly connecting likeminded thinkers, armed with imagination, intellect and drive, we know positive change is possible - far beyond this publishing platform.
That’s our big dream for Thread Publishing. We don’t simply want to tell the story; we want to be part of the change.
